Sabrina Carpenter has spoken out about the sexually explicit lyrics on her latest album, “Man’s Best Friend.” Sabrina has been criticized in the past for her explicit lyrics, but she recently called her critics purists and dismissed them.
“You can be sure that there is always a little play, a little wink, in everything I do and say,” she said.
Explaining why she tackles such topics, Sabrina said, "It's very nuanced, and I'm not naive, I was like, 'Why is this considered taboo?'... It's something that women go through in a very real way, learning to be comfortable with themselves and accept themselves for who they are."
In an interview with Interview editor-in-chief Mel Ottenberg (Rihanna's former stylist), Sabrina said, "I'm glad you like my sexy content."
The album's overt lyrics, for example, include the refrain from the song "Tears": "I'm turned on by the thought that you're a responsible boy, that you do what you're supposed to do. Tears are flowing down my thighs." In another song, he wishes his ex "a lifetime of happiness and an eternally indifferent sex life," adding, "You still have your right hand."
Speaking about the album, Sabrina said: "There are so many reasons why I called it 'Man's Best Friend', there are so many layers to the experiences I've been through that emotionally I felt like a true friend."
"I'm so grateful to have an audience that truly understands me as a person and will be able to hear these songs the way I intended them to be. Of course, there will always be room for interpretation, and I understand that," the singer added.
The singer has previously said that her album is not for the faint of heart.
